how multimediality shapes interdisciplinary research
in the field of Italian and Visual Culture Studies

The "digital revolution" forces us both to rethink the
correspondences between art and science and to reconsider the role
of technologies in literature. The Winter School /Tran(s)missions:
how multimediality shapes interdisciplinary research in the field of
Italian and Visual Culture Studies/ explores the meaning of
interdisciplinarity and multimediality using a synergistic approach
that combines different methodologies coming from the field of
Italian Studies, Digital Humanities, studies on digital cultures and
research methods focused on the materiality of the object. Through
the application in a laboratory form of the devices used in Digital
Humanities, the Winter School stimulates innovative
interdisciplinary thinking, and provides participants with the tools
suitable for the identification of relationships that affect the
multimediality from the textual, visual and spatial point of view,
and how it is presented in different media, forms and literary
sources in the early modern and contemporary world. The inclusion of
scholars and artists working in the international field, and coming
from different sectors, is seen in a dialogical key to widen the
debate around Digital Humanities and digital cultures, in order to
encourage a comparison between different methodologies and
alternative procedures involving the field of Italian Studies.
The program, in hybrid format online and in person at the Department
of Humanities of Roma Tre (via Ostiense 234, Rome), includes morning
classes and afternoon workshops dedicated to the realization of a
research project and a final exhibition. The lessons will be held in
Italian and English. Among the proposed activities are round-tables,
one-to-one tutorials and group workshops, visits to institutions and
informal discussions on the topics addressed by the Winter School.
The visits will take place at the Gagosian, Lorcan O'Neill,
Gladstone and Frutta Galleries, the Domus Aurea, Santa Maria
Antiqua, Palazzo Valentini, and the Litografia Bulla, while the
exhibition will take place in virtual form on the New Art City
Virtual Art Space (https://newart.city/ <https://newart.city/>) and
on site at Spazio Taverna (Palazzo Taverna, Rome). The research and
discussion results will be published on the GitHub platform. It will
also be possible to produce a publication in the form of a
scientific article or catalogue with the presentation of the works
and theoretical contributions made in occasion of the Winter School.
The call to participate in the Winter School is open to students and
researchers, artists, curators, library science specialists,
engineers, technicians-archivists who conduct interdisciplinary
studies in the field of Italian and Cultural Studies, opening their
perspectives of investigation to the relationship between word and
image, visual culture, media studies, material culture studies, film
studies, digital storytelling, creative writing, digital and public
humanities, visual arts, art history, history, and computer science.
A good knowledge of English is desirable.
To participate you should send a short CV, and a motivational letter
(500 words) with a presentation of the project you intend to carry
out during the Winter School to the email address:

or a new project. The application deadline is extended to December
30, 2022.
The tuition fee is 250€ (plus administrative taxes), the deadline

La “rivoluzione digitale” ci costringe tanto a ripensare le
corrispondenze tra arte e scienza, quanto a riconsiderare il ruolo
delle tecnologie in letteratura. La Winter School /Tra(s)missioni:
come la multimedialità forma e riforma la ricerca interdisciplinare
nell’ambito dell’italianistica e della cultura visuale/ esplora il
significato di interdisciplinarità e multimedialità unendo diverse
tipologie di studio provenienti dal campo dell’Italianistica, delle
Digital Humanities, dagli studi sulle culture digitali e da metodi
di ricerca incentrati sulla materialità dell’oggetto. Attraverso
l’applicazione in forma laboratoriale dei dispositivi utilizzati in
ambito umanistico-digitale, la Winter School intende stimolare nuove
riflessioni interdisciplinari e fornire ai partecipanti gli
strumenti per individuare le relazioni che attraversano la
multimedialità dal punto di vista testuale, visivo e spaziale, e
come essa si presenta nei diversi mezzi, forme e fonti letterarie
nel mondo moderno e contemporaneo. L’inclusione di studiosi e
artisti che operano in ambito internazionale, e provenienti da
diversi settori, è vista in una chiave dialogica per allargare il
dibattito intorno alle Digital Humanities e alle culture digitali,
al fine di favorire un confronto tra metodologie diverse e procedure
alternative che coinvolgono il campo dell’Italianistica.
Il programma, in formato ibrido online e in presenza presso il
Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici di Roma Tre (via Ostiense 234,
Roma), prevede lezioni mattutine e workshop pomeridiani dedicati
alla realizzazione di un progetto di ricerca e una mostra finale. Le
lezioni si svolgeranno in italiano e inglese, con traduzione
simultanea. Tra le attività proposte sono incluse tavole rotonde,
tutorial individuali e laboratori di gruppo, visite presso
istituzioni e discussioni informali sui temi affrontati dalla Winter
School. Le visite si svolgeranno presso le gallerie Gagosian, Lorcan
O'Neill, Gladstone e Frutta Gallery, la Domus Transitoria, Santa
Maria Antiqua, Palazzo Valentini, e la Litografia Bulla, mentre la
mostra avverrà in forma virtuale sul New Art City Virtual Art Space
(https://newart.city/ <https://newart.city/>) e on site presso lo
Spazio Taverna (Palazzo Taverna, Roma). I risultati delle ricerche e
delle discussioni saranno pubblicati sulla piattaforma GitHub. Sarà
inoltre possibile realizzare una pubblicazione in forma di articolo
scientifico o catalogo con la presentazione delle opere e i
contributi teorici realizzati a partire dalla Winter School.
Il bando per partecipare alla Winter School è rivolto a studenti e
ricercatori, artisti, curatori, specialisti in biblioteconomia e
scienze del libro, ingegneri, tecnici-archivisti che conducono studi
interdisciplinari nell’ambito dell’italianistica e dei Cultural
Studies, aprendo le proprie prospettive d’indagine al rapporto tra
parola e immagine, alla cultura visuale, ai media, agli studi sulla
cultura materiale, al cinema, al digital storytelling, alla
scrittura creativa, alle digital and public humanities, alle arti
visive, alla storia dell’arte, alla storia, e all’informatica. È
auspicabile una buona conoscenza della lingua inglese.
Per partecipare è necessario inviare un breve c.v. e una lettera
motivazionale (500 parole) con la presentazione del progetto che si
intende svolgere nel corso della Winter School all’indirizzo e-mail:

progetto può essere in corso di svolgimento (da approfondire durante
