Subject: XR & Attention Research Seminar 5: Virtual Mountain Estate, 3-5pm Wed 19 February 2025

Dear All,

I'm pleased to invite you to the fifth online seminar in the XR & Attention
Research series at 3-5pm on Wednesday 19 February. Our next talk is "Virtual
Mountain Estate: From Static Representation to Experimental Remediation"
delivered by Hedren Sum, Postdoctoral Research Fellow for DH, Department of
English, Linguistics, and Theatre Studies, National University of Singapore, and
Stephen Whiteman, Reader in the Art and Architecture of China, The Courtauld.

This seminar will present the Virtual Mountain Estate (VME) project and will
exploring how 3D modelling and XR technologies can be used to critically
reconstruct cultural landscapes. Centred on the Qing imperial park-palace of
Bishu shanzhuang 避暑山莊—the Mountain Estate to Escape the Summer Heat—around 1713,
VME draws upon diverse sources: poems by the Kangxi emperor (r. 1661–1722) and
their annotations, woodblock illustrations, architectural plans, archival
research on interiors, and visual comparisons with contemporaneous landscapes
