Dear fellow digital humanists,

It is with saddness that I report that Ian Lacashire died on April 3rd, 2025.
Born in Winnepeg, Manitoba in 1942 he studied at the University of Manitoba and
University of Toronto where he was first hired in 1967 and from which he retired
a Full Professor.

Ian Lancashire was instrumental in the development of humanities computing in
Canada. In the 1980s he established, with support from IBM Canada, the Centre
for Computing in the Humanities (CCH) at the University of Toronto. The CCH
provided support to many of us in the 1980s and early 1990s and legitimized our
interest in the application of computing to research and teaching in the
humanities at a time when it wasn’t an obvious combination. Among many community
building activities the CCH organized the first joint ACH/ALLC conference in
1989 in Toronto; a conference which eventually turned into the ADHO DH
conference. It was at this conference that TACT (Text Analysis and Concording
Tool) was released, a tool whose development was supported by the CCH. TACT in
turn influenced later Canadian text analysis tools including Voyant.

Ian Lancashire was also responsible for developing the bilingual Consortium for
Computers and the Humanities/Consortium pour Ordinateurs en Sciences Humaines
(COCH/COSH) which evolved into our Canadian Society for Digital
Humanities/Société canadienne des humanités numériques (CSDH/SCHN). He served as
President of COCH/COSH for 10 years (1992–2003) and in 2004 was recognized with
its Outstanding Achievement award. The CSDH/SCHN Award for Student Promise is
also named after him in recognition of his support and leadership.
