Subject: Invitation to Participate in Research Study on UX Methods in Digital Humanities Projects
Dear Humanists,
Professor Liza Potts (Michigan State University) and I invite you to participate
in a research study entitled "User Experience Methods in Digital Humanities
Projects”.
We are interested in understanding how digital humanities (DH) scholars apply
the user experience (UX) process to build, design, improve, and sustain their
digital projects, public archives and apps. Knowing how important it is to have
a strong user experience to support digital storytelling in the humanities, we
are wondering how teams and individual practitioners/scholars are conducting
user research, testing their interfaces, and deploying their tools to the
general public and other academic researchers.
Participation involves completing a short online survey
(https://byu.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_d6hcIYcX6lc98vc), which should take
approximately 15 minutes of your time. Your insights would contribute greatly to
understanding current practices and challenges in this area.
Through this survey, we are aiming to open a conversation about how we can make
the iterative user experience process more integrated within the DH sensibility,
thus widening our work’s appeal and access. This survey is the next step in a
longer project that began with a landscape analysis and environmental scan of
the spaces and places where DH work gets done. It also builds on the work by
other scholars who have published about similar ideas around interface design
and digital humanities (Gibbs and Owens, 2012; Kemman and Kleppe, 2014; Potts,
2015; Thoden et al, 2017; Warwick, 2012; & Warwick et al., 2008). With this
survey, we are hoping to learn more, using these findings to then move into
interviews with DH practitioners and researchers, presenting our work at future
conferences and potentially co-editing a collection that will continue to
encourage others to consider the UX process in their projects and processes.
Please note:
• Participation is entirely voluntary.
• You may withdraw at any time without consequence.
• There is no compensation for participation.
• This survey is open to anyone who works in any area of digital
humanities
• The survey will remain open for 30 days and will close on 15 November
2025
If you are interested, you can access the survey here:
