George Mason University
Cultural Studies
The PhD in Cultural Studies at George Mason University bridges critical theory,
interdisciplinary scholarship and social transformation.
Our program is the oldest of its kind in the U.S. It is designed to augment
traditional disciplinary training in the humanities and social sciences with
rigorous training in interdisciplinary work. Hence, it is not a self-designed
(liberal studies) degree but one steeped in the traditions of cultural studies,
the agenda of which is to train students in the skills it takes to engage
critically with the current cultural and political conjuncture.
The program's watchword is topicality: our curriculum offers coursework in
gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, power, the state, nationalism, political
economy and biopolitics, as well as mass, visual and digital culture. Students
read contemporary cultural and critical theory from Marx and Foucault to queer
and critical race theory, and work to put that theory to the test of evidence.
Student research interests vary widely; past dissertation topics include:
Harvesting Home: Economy, Gender and Identity in the Crop Over Festival; Texting
Capital: Mobile Phones, Social Transformation, and the Reproduction of Power in
the Philippines; Working Paradise: An Ethnographic Study of Tourism Labor in the
21st Century Caribbean; Activist Museums - History, Memory, and the Politics of
Exhibition; Picturing Capital: Mass Media and the Art of Visualizing Poverty.
Our Cultural Studies program attracts a diverse, international student body
whose graduates have gone on to successful academic and professional careers.
Alumni hold faculty positions at institutions such as the University of Utah,
Simmons College, Cal State Fullerton, University of Maryland-Baltimore County,
SUNY Empire State College, Cornish College of the Arts, Columbia College
Chicago, and Grand Valley State University, as well as several universities
abroad. Others have applied their degrees in nonprofit, cultural, and policy
organizations.
Located in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, our program offers flexible
scheduling--courses meet once a week, Monday through Thursday, in the late
afternoon or evening--making part-time study possible. Financial aid is
available for promising full-time students.
