Training Workshop Announcement

(dh)2: Training the Next Generation of Digital Classicists

DATE: May 18, 2026

The Classics and Ancient History Department at Durham University is pleased
to offer a training workshop for emerging scholars in Digital Classics.

The Classics department at Durham hosts one of the largest clusters of
researchers in Digital Classics in the UK, with a strong track record of
external funding and early career mentorship on the subject.

We are committed to supporting the next generation of Digital Classicists
by providing them with the tools and knowledge they need to pursue a career
in this field.

The workshop will cover the following topics:

   - Overview of key resources, tools, and skills needed to work with digital
methods in Classics and Ancient History research
   - 1-1 networking opportunities and focused sessions to develop project
ideas with experts and potential postdoc mentors
   - Essential training on how to design, pitch, and write a successful
   postdoc project in Digital Classics
   - Guidance on the postdoc funding landscape in Digital Classics

Audience
This event is aimed at advanced PhD students in their last or close to
their last year of study, who are planning to pursue a postdoc in Classics
with a Digital Humanities component but have no significant prior training.
We also welcome applications from PhDs and recent graduates currently in
temporary academic or administrative roles seeking to transition into
postdoctoral research.

We especially encourage individuals interested in pursuing a postdoc at
Durham, and will give priority to applications with a clear interest in
working with a Durham-based supervisor.

Bursaries are available to cover reasonable travel expenses and lodging (up
to 100GBP per night) that are not covered by internal travel funds. If you
anticipate needing travel support, please indicate it in the application
form.
