Subject: Hiring PhD in Global Connectivity of Antinuclear Resistance at C2DH
Dear all,
I am currently hiring for a PhD position, and I would be grateful if you could
help me spread the word - all details below.
Many thanks,
Marten
Your role
You will study the personal and intellectual connectivity of antinuclear
movements in a global perspective, a genuine gap in the history of antinuclear
movements. While earlier work has shown that such connectivity existed between
European countries and the United States, the PhD project will expand the focus
to include hitherto understudied countries like India, Taiwan and Japan. Rooted
in the theoretical frameworks of transnational history, the project will compare
evolving knowledge horizons, idea transfers and their appropriation against the
background domestic political and societal contexts.
As part of this project you will:
* Conduct original archival research into historical antinuclear movement
publications, drawing e.g. on digitized newspaper collections, activist
bulletins, and grey literature held in national and international repositories
* Apply state-of-the-art digital methods — including e.g. AI services, text
analysis, corpus exploration, and data visualization — to trace the circulation
of ideas across national contexts
* Work with state-of-the-art research platforms provided by the Impresso
project : https://impresso-project.ch/
* Contribute to teaching and supervision activities at MA level, including
seminar preparation and feedback on student work, gaining hands-on experience in
academic pedagogy within a digital history context
Your profile
You hold a Master’s degree in history, digital humanities, computer science, or
a related field, and have hands-on experience with historical research through
your thesis and/or past projects.
If your background is primarily in history or the humanities, you have some
familiarity with digital or computational methods such as text analysis, data
exploration, and work with contemporary AI platforms, and are willing to develop
throughout the project. If your background is in computer science or a related
technical field, you bring demonstrated interest in historical research
questions, and are strongly motivated to deepen your historical research skills
within a collaborative humanities environment.
In either case, you embody both technical curiosity and genuine historical
sensibility.
