JOB OPPORTUNITY
Senior Researcher
Duration of Contract: Fixed term appointment or secondment to 30 June 2027
Location: predominantly home-based with regular meetings in Edinburgh and
London
Closing Date: 10 August 2025 (midnight)
Hours: 28 hours per week

Towards a National Collection, based at Historic Environment Scotland
(HES), seeks a Senior Researcher to manage, undertake, commission,
disseminate and report on research and technical development for the
National Infrastructure for Cultural Heritage (N-RICH) Prototype project.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Towards a National Collection started with a UK-wide research and
development programme, funded through UKRI’s Strategic Priorities Fund and
delivered by the AHRC. This five-year initiative concluded in March 2025
and has laid the essential groundwork for the National Research
Infrastructure for Cultural Heritage (N-RICH) Prototype, a two-year
initiative, launched in July 2025, delivered in collaboration between the
Towards a National Collection programme and AHRC, funded by UKRI.
The N-RICH Prototype project will explore the potential for a UK-wide
digital collections research infrastructure, designed to enhance access to
and engagement with the UK’s cultural heritage collections. The Prototype
will test key components and inform future infrastructure development.

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Senior Researcher will be part of the Towards a National Collection
team and focus on the early development of the digital collections research
infrastructure, building on work already done in the Towards a National
Collection programme.
The role will make a significant contribution to specifying the N-RICH
Prototype work packages, which include three cross-cutting research
frameworks on environmental impact, ethics, and cybersecurity, a
Digitisation Capability Pilot, a Prototype infrastructure, as well as the
evaluation of tender bids. The postholder will monitor delivery, synthesise
technical developments, and identify and fill any evidence gaps, and will
liaise with appointed advisors, partner institutions, related national and
international infrastructures, as well as with AHRC.
The post will be predominantly home-based with regular meetings in
Edinburgh and London, and will require liaison across the UK, which will
include travel and overnight stays.
